Premise: We will visit Fort Loudoun State Historic Area for a guided tour that will cover the history of the fort and the lives of the soldiers who called it home from 1756 – 1760. Following that, we will travel to Lost Sea Caverns and participate in the Wild Cave Tour. This tour begins with the regular cavern tour and a boat ride on the Lost Sea (America’s largest underground lake) and continues with a special overnight tour. We’ll explore the undeveloped cave rooms–crawling through cracks, crevices, nooks, and crannies–and then we will camp out in the cave overnight.
Meals:
Saturday Lunch: bag lunch
Saturday Dinner: fast food (bring $$)
Sunday Breakfast: troop provides (granola bars or bagels, yogurt, fruit)
Sunday Lunch: fast food (bring $$)
What to Pack:
Clothing: We will travel in Class A, so come in uniform Saturday morning. Bring a rain jacket for Fort Loudoun, just in case. You will get muddy during the spelunking tour, so wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty–long pants required (NO SHORTS please), a warm long-sleeved shirt, and old shoes. Bring a change of clothes for Saturday night. The temperature in the cave is a constant 58 degrees. When you are moving you won’t get cold, but a light jacket is advisable at the campsite.
Other Gear: Sleep Sheet to protect sleeping bag, Headlamp and extra batteries; water bottle; sleeping bag, sleeping pad and ground cloth/tarp; wet wipes; snacks; garbage bag for dirty clothes/shoes; cards or small games and a book for the bus ride. There are 100+ steps to reach the campsite, so pack accordingly.
Optional: Extra spending money for the gift shops at Fort Loudoun and Lost Sea Cave. FYI, there will be Lost Sea Overnight Adventure patches available for $5.
